About the Rudolph P. Bratty Family Collection
Comprising nearly 25,000 photographs of Canadian subject matter from The New York Times Photo Archive, the Rudolph P. Bratty Family Collection was donated to the Ryerson Image Centre in 2017 by real estate entrepreneur Chris Bratty as a generous act of cultural repatriation. The collection represents diverse aspects of Canadian history and culture in the 20th century, including political events, life during wartime, travel photographs, and portraits of notable and everyday Canadians. Both published and unpublished, the press prints were produced by The New York Times staff photographers as well as other photojournalists, international wire services, private corporations, and Canadian government agencies. The variety of media and production techniques in this collection reflects the evolution of news photography over a period of a hundred years.
